AODE to 4R70W Swap
Swapping in a 4R70W is a popular upgrade for the AODE. The 4R70W is nearly the same transmission with beefier parts and wider ratio gearing.
When performing the swap, a tune will be necessary to adjust for the gearing of the 4R70W.
Don LaSota's site has a great article on everything entailed in the 4R70W swap.
Shift Kits
A shift kit will modify the valvebody and alter how fast and how much fluid is transferred around the transmission.
Torque Converters
An aftermarket torque converter will really wake up even a stock AODE.
Converter Math[1]
Here is some math to consider on Converters. This is why an engine dyno sheet is important if you have one. Because your parts as a whole if properly matched, cam, heads, intake, fuel and spark, will be graphically demonstrated and you'll have numbers to plug into the formula below.
K factor
K=N/sqrt T
K=Engine Speed over Sq root of Torque.
1500 stall speed converter.
Solving for Torque.
T=N^2/K^2
1500^2 / 110^2 or 186ft-lbs
Solving for K or what stall actually is represented by K
Take a 165K converter and you want to know the stall speed.
K=N/sqrt T
165*186^1/2 = 2250

Transmission Flud
Mercon V is recommended for both its ability to withstand high temperatures as well as its resistance to "torque converter shudder"
See the Ford TSB for instructions on replacing your current fluid with Mercon V.
MLPS and Shifting Rod Adjustment
To adjust the MLPS, put the car in neutral and look with a flashlight for two notches cut into the MLPS - line them up, tighten it down to the transmission and then adjust your shifting rod.
To adjust the shifting rod, unbolt the shifter from the shifting rod - it's a 1/2 bolt if I remember correctly. Put the car in neutral, both with the shifter and by manually pulling the shifter rod towards the rear of the car all the way (Park) and then pushing it forward two clicks (Neutral) on the shifting rod to get it in Neutral. Then tighten the shifter to shifting rod bolt.
