How to do an oil change

An oil change is a simple process that should be done every 3,000 or even less if you drive it hard. Most people know how to do this, but just in case you don't here is a quick guide.

First you need to make sure you have everything you need.

  • 5 quarts of oil
  • 1 oil filter (motorcraft FL-1A prefered)
  • Socket wrench
  • 15mm socket
  • Jack
  • Oil pan
  • Oil filter wrench (not required)

The sn95 5.0's have 2 oil drains, one at the front of the pan and one in the back.

Use your 15mm socket to remove the front oil pan drain, make sure the car is level.

Reinstall the front oil drain plug. Move to the back and start removing the 2nd drain plug. On convertible models you will have an X member that is in the way. There is an access hole right under the bolt to squeeze your socket with extension into.

Reinstall the rear drain bolt. Clean up sway bar and X member with a shop towel so you dont get oil all over the concrete. Next we will remove the oil filter, when my hands are all slippery I like to pat my hands on a sandy area of concrete so I can have grip.

Prep your new oil filter by putting a tad bit of new oil inside, then rub some new oil around the rubber seal so it doesn't get into a bind when you tighten it to the block.

After putting the new oil filter on, go ahead and add 5 quarts of oil in the oil fill tube. Start the car up, check for leaks, then make sure its full. Thats it.
