Setting Up the Lash and Preload on Stud Mount Rocker Arms

  1. Locate the firing order of your engine.
  2. Put the #1 piston at top dead center of the compression stroke and your balancer at "0".
  3. Starting at "0" on the balancer, put a dab of RTV at 45 degree intervals on the balancer.
  4. When the #1 piston is on the compression stroke, both lifters will be at the bottom of their travel. If you have the intake off, you can verify this.
  5. Grab the pushrod and wiggle it up and down while slowly tightening the rocker arm bolt. When the pushrod no longer has any play, stop. You are now at "Zero Lash".
  6. Turn the rocker nut between 1/4 and 3/4 of a turn. This is called the "preload". 1/4 of a turn yields a bit more power but nosier operation while 3/4 of a turn is quieter but slightly less power.
  7. Move on to the other pushrod on this same cylinder and set it to zero lash and add in your preload.
  8. After both lifters are done for the cylinder, use breaker bar and 15/16" socket on the balancer bolt to turn the engine 45 degrees clockwise. (to the next RTV mark you put on the balancer)
  9. Go to the next cylinder in the firing order and repeat steps 5-8 until you have adjusted all cylinders.
